Picking the right fly boxes is crucial. You should have enough room to store dry flies in their natural habitat without having to crush their hackles. A couple of smaller containers lined with foam and fastened with metal clips should also be on hand. These are perfect for storing your streamers, nymphs, and wet flies. When fishing, it's a good idea to have a few little vials on hand to capture flies in case you catch any.

Keep an extra spool of line and backing on hand to load your reel in case you need it. A fly fisherman should always carry a sharpening stone, a Swiss Army knife, a leader wallet, a couple spools of monofilament leader material, and other essentials on hand.

For fly fishing, insect repellant is a must-have. Insect repellents often contain DEET, an industrial solvent that can dissolve fly line finishes, weaken leads, ruin rain gear, and harm fly rod varnish. Be wary of whatever it comes into contact with, and use as little as possible if you insist on using an insect repellent containing DEET. Nowadays, you may find a lot of items that are free of that solvent.

To shield your eyes from the sun's harmful rays while still seeing the fish, invest in a quality pair of polarized sunglasses. An additional must-have is a compact, bendable-neck flashlight. Among its many potential applications is the alteration of fly species during dawn and dusk. A decent knife with many blades, a tiny jar of split shot, a thermometer, and a first-aid emergency bag are some helpful supplies.

When fly fishing, many anglers find that a foldable wading staff is an invaluable tool. It aids their stability when wading through swift water or on uneven terrain. One useful tool for netting fish is a little cotton mesh net that has a short handle. A little canvas or woven willow basket is perfect for storing your catch if you plan on keeping it.
