Accessory Items for Fly Fishing
For fly fishing, you'll need a number of accessories on top of the right clothes and well-balanced gear. You can't wade without all of your equipment, even if some of these extras appear weird.
An essential piece of gear for any fly fisherman is a vest, and you already have one with plenty of big pockets. To keep extra flies on hand, you may line the front of the vaste with a sheepskin patch. Additionally, a set of nail clippers on a retractable spool that is spring-loaded and fastens to your vest is a must-have item. To cut knots, they are a lifesaver. A piece of rubber for leader straightening can be useful. A roomy rear pocket to stow small rain gear is an ideal feature of the vest. To further conceal the net, some vests feature a ring on the rear of the collar that may be fastened.
Keep an extra spool of line and backing on hand to load your reel in case you need it. A fly fisherman should always carry a sharpening stone, a Swiss Army knife, a leader wallet, a couple spools of monofilament leader material, and other essentials on hand.
For fly fishing, insect repellant is a must-have. Insect repellents often contain DEET, an industrial solvent that can dissolve fly line finishes, weaken leads, ruin rain gear, and harm fly rod varnish. Be wary of whatever it comes into contact with, and use as little as possible if you insist on using an insect repellent containing DEET. Nowadays, you may find a lot of items that are free of that solvent.
To shield your eyes from the sun's harmful rays while still seeing the fish, invest in a quality pair of polarized sunglasses. An additional must-have is a compact, bendable-neck flashlight. Among its many potential applications is the alteration of fly species during dawn and dusk. A decent knife with many blades, a tiny jar of split shot, a thermometer, and a first-aid emergency bag are some helpful supplies.
When fly fishing, many anglers find that a foldable wading staff is an invaluable tool. It aids their stability when wading through swift water or on uneven terrain. One useful tool for netting fish is a little cotton mesh net that has a short handle. A little canvas or woven willow basket is perfect for storing your catch if you plan on keeping it.
These days, fly fishermen can choose from a wide variety of accessories. Every angler has his own unique set of tastes when it comes to several of the options.
